Upon the Election of Barack Obama

These are unprecedented times. With the election of over 25 new Democrat legislators, as well as possibly the most virulent collectivist President the nation has ever seen, it may seem as if the ideals of liberty, personal responsibility and limited government have been defeated. However, this election was not a rejection of conservative ideas as much as a rejection of moderate Republican ideas. The Republican Party sounded its own death knell when they nominated John McCain to run for the Presidency. Whether they will admit it or not, the American people voted out George Bush and John McCain much more firmly than they voted in Barack Obama. “Given a choice between two ‘big-government parties,’” says Michael Tanner of the Cato Institute, “voters will choose the Democrats every time.”

This election not only proves the impotence of moderate Republican politics, but it also demonstrates the utter failure of our socialized education system. The fact that a President can be elected by a people who know so little about him shows that the average voter does not have the basic competency skills to accurately vote according to their political beliefs, or even to have beliefs at all. A study was conducted by a political talk-show host in which he interviewed “average Obama supporters” on the street. He asked them if they agreed with Obama on basic policy issues, but instead of mentioning Obama’s position, he would present McCain’s stances on the issues as if they were Obama’s. For example, he asked, “Do you agree with Obama that the troop surge in Iraq was successful?” (which is obviously McCain’s position, not Obama’s.) Without hesitation, every Obama supporter agreed with the McCain positions that were purportedly Obama’s. This sort of blind loyalty to any politician should seriously alarm us, and would especially alarm our founding fathers. The men who built our Constitution would be in utter shock at how much adulation Obama’s supporters are giving him. Indeed, our Constitution was founded to protect us from too much power in the hands of one person, thus making the legislative branch the truly representative branch. For this many voters not to recognize this fact, and to vote for Mr. Obama on his appearance, style, and ambiguous promises alone demonstrates the complete failure of our public schooling system in providing citizens with basic civic education.

As a result of this disturbing trend we must now begin the task of exposing President Elect Obama for what he is. In the coming years, dear conservative, you must, we all must work tirelessly, and watch our elected officials with more scrutiny than we ever have. This is not the task of only those more politically inclined minds, it is the common task of every citizen. Each individual must find his values, and find the voice with which to shout them from the mountain tops. As the great Frederick Douglass said regarding the injustice of slavery,
“It is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but
thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. The feeling of
the nation must be quickened; the conscience of the nation must be roused; the
propriety of the nation must be startled.”

The circumstances are different, and the slavery we face is far subtler, but nevertheless, the need is just as pressing.

It is our hope that you will undertake to watch this government closely, and make known your opposition to the preposterous pieces of socialistic legislation that will inevitably be put forth. Read the bills that come before Congress and form an opinion, based on the principles of freedom, and then tell your own legislators that you agree or disagree with them. The time has passed to be neutral on any issue. The time has also passed to focus on one issue at the expense of others. The nation is in need of comprehensive change, not just minute token gestures.

Under our form of democratic republic, the people have ultimate sovereignty over the government. Now is the time to put that sovereignty into action. We must do everything within our power to assure first that our coming President and Congress do not create a climate of restricted freedoms and government oppression, and second that a government with this makeup is never, never voted into office again. Fellow citizen, the minds of the people are available, their opinions can actually be altered. Those committed to freedom must educate themselves first, so that they are able to undertake this winning of minds. Do not be content to merely vote. Henry David Thoreau said, “Even voting for the right is doing nothing for it. It is only expressing to men feebly your desire that it should prevail.” In that sense, voting alone is hypocritical. No, American, much more is expected of you.

Freedom loving American, we proudly stand beside you and take up the just fight for the protection of our inalienable rights.
